The

Ondon will experience winds of 50 mph on Tuesday as Storm Barra reaches the capital.

Forecasters issued yellow weather warnings after forecasting strong winds and torrential rain in southern England from lunchtime on Tuesday.

“During the night on Monday, we have an active front moving from the west,” said Dan Stroud, a forecast expert at the Met Office.

“This will result in a short-lived wave of heavy rain and stormy conditions in London during the mid to late morning and afternoon. Moderate to heavy rain with massive weather.

“Then on Tuesday we see high pressure that will make the skies clear overnight into Tuesday. Then Storm Barra starts moving – it’s a very low pressure area as it crosses the UK from Ireland on Tuesday morning and into the afternoon.

“Very cold start on Tuesday morning, there will be an outbreak of heavy rain by lunchtime in London and then lower east.

“Temperatures will be around 0°C so a very cold start in London. But temperatures recover quickly as the clouds enter. But the biggest feature everyone will notice on Tuesday is the strength of the wind.

“We have a Yellow Wing Warning in effect. We expect winds of 45 to 50 mph but they are not likely to hit London until late in the morning or early in the afternoon. But there will definitely be a wave of strong, gusty winds moving across London”.

He added that as the storm begins to mature on Wednesday, the capital will see “another unstable day with rain, longer spells of rain” and the risk of gales.

It comes as Energy Minister Kwasi Koarting said it was “totally unacceptable” some people were still without power more than a week after Storm Irwin.

The Energy Network Association (ENA) said 4,025 homes were still waiting to be reconnected as of 8 a.m. Sunday. That’s down from 4,700 homes Saturday night.

The majority of the affected homes are in the north-east of England, the agency added.

Mr. Kwarteng visited Durham to survey the damage caused by the storm.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: “I totally agree that this is totally unacceptable.

“It’s wrong and bad for people to be out of power for so long. That’s why I’m here to make sure we can get people back as quickly as possible.”

“Like I said, for 99.5 percent of people are back in work again, but for those who still have to put up with this is unacceptable.”

He added that a review would be conducted and if it was found that energy companies had failed to invest in infrastructure, “there may be enforcement action.”
