A former inmate says there will be no “hiding” in prison for the couple behind the death of Arthur Labingo Hughes, who he says may have been targeted by inmates who “have nothing to lose.”

Emma Tustin, 32, was jailed for life for the murder of her six-year-old stepson Arthur while the boy’s father, Thomas Hughes, 29, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for manslaughter.

Over the weekend, it emerged that evil stepmother Tustin’s cellmates had greased her food with salt, after learning that she had killed the six-year-old.

Reformed criminal Richard Jones spoke about the experience the husband is expected to live in prison.

Jones said that while Tastin, who used to make Arthur stand against a wall for hours on end, was sentenced to the longest prison sentence, it was likely Hughes who would suffer the most behind bars.

The 51-year-old added that the pair would be classified as “lower”.

“Involvement in the death of a child through abuse is something that is at the forefront with rapists and rapists,” he said.

“She will probably have an easier time with her despite a life sentence – just because of the nature of the people around her.

“Some women hate it, and they may feel a little sad, but that depends on prison. He will fear for his life more than anyone else because men are by nature more violent.”

Ex-Soldier Jones himself was released from prison in 2019 after serving seven years for conspiracy to supply cocaine.

He spoke to the Daily Star about my young father Arthur, who was poisoned, starved and beaten during a campaign of horrific abuse before his death.

Jones now believes that the boy’s killers have “nowhere to hide” in prison.

He said, “Because this issue is so public, everyone will know who they are and there will be no hiding. However, he has got many years inside but it only takes a few seconds to do damage.

“People won’t be bothered about intimidating his food because they would be more annoyed about reaching for it.

It will be the people in these prisons who have nothing to lose – but he will not know who they are. It could even be someone waiting outside – that’s far away but people never forget.”

He also said that killers might be attacked in prison by someone they did not consider a threat.

He added, “There will always be someone out there, whether in a female or male property, who will eventually come across having nothing to offer and will take it upon themselves.

“That person could be someone who does their job and they’re usually fine, but it only takes one person to make a bad phone call and they come up with an ax to grind and think ‘Right I’m doing them today’.”

“They can think they are safe with this person because they are usually ignoring them but this time the person ignoring them had a bad call or lost a parent or been abandoned and all of a sudden they have nothing to lose.

“It could be something that simple.”

Jones also believes that Hughes will have to be careful each time he goes to prisons.

He added, “When he goes from Class A to Class B and so on, he has to start the journey again.

“You can’t build a reputation or a social platform in one prison and move to another and hope you are ok. There will be completely different people, nails, wings, layouts and he will have to start over.”

Arthur, of Solihull, was killed in June 2020 after suffering brain damage from a ‘vibration injury’.

His killers were imprisoned at Crown Court in Coventry last Friday – Tustin had to serve at least 29 years.

Tastin tries to blame Arthur himself for the injuries after she lied to the cops who were answering the 999 call.

But the inconvenient truth is that Tustin repeatedly slapped his head on a hard surface.

Jones warned that when he served at Lodham Grange Prison, information was leaked about one being late who was said to have abused a child.

Explaining the consequences, he said, “we discovered a man there and he was severely assaulted with a blade in one of the wings because they found out that he had assaulted a child.”
