Reuters reported, quoting a French police source, that a suspect linked to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi had been arrested in France.
French radio station RTL reported that the man was arrested at Charles de Gaulle airport near Paris as he was about to board a plane bound for Riyadh.
A source in the French police also told Reuters that the detainee is Khaled Ayed Al-Otaibi, the former Saudi royal guard, and that the procedures for his extradition to Turkey are scheduled to begin.
Jamal Khashoggi: How the journalist met his death inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul
The source said he is on the French wanted list and was arrested on the basis of a warrant issued by Turkey in 2019.
Al-Otaibi has also been a target of UK sanctions.
“He was implicated in the unlawful killing of Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, as part of the 15-man team sent by Saudi authorities to Turkey,” a report on sanctions said.
The report added that he was “involved in concealing evidence at the headquarters of the Saudi Consul General after the murder.”
The arrest came just days after French President Emmanuel Macron held direct talks in Saudi Arabia with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, becoming the first major Western leader to visit the kingdom since Khashoggi’s murder.
Who is Jamal Khashoggi?
Mr. Khashoggi was a Saudi resident in the United States and a reporter who was a frequent critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
He was murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul three years ago by a team of men linked to the crown prince.

His body has not been found.
An intelligence report, to which the CIA mostly contributed, found that bin Salman likely approved an operation to kill or capture the journalist, but the crown prince denied any involvement.
Five were sentenced to death in connection with Khashoggi’s murder
Saudi Arabia has previously said Khashoggi was killed in a rogue operation carried out by a delivery squad.
Five people have been sentenced to death after a secret trial, according to the country’s public prosecutor.
Last year, Saudi courts announced that they had sentenced eight Saudi nationals to prison, but their identities have not been revealed.
Justin Bieber urged against performing a play on the death of Mr. Khashoggi
Earlier this month, Khashoggi’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, urged Justin Bieber to cancel his December show in the country, saying it should instead “send a strong message to the world” that his name “will not be used to restore the reputation of the regime, which is killing its critics.” “.

The Grammy Award winner is scheduled to perform in Jeddah on December 5 as the country hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia.
In an open letter published in the Washington Post, Ms. Jenkins wrote: “Do not sing to the killers of my beloved Jamal.
Please speak up and condemn his killer, Mohammed bin Salman, your voice will be heard by millions.
And she continued, “If you refuse to be the pawn of Mohammed bin Salman, your message will be loud and clear: I do not lead to dictators. I choose justice and freedom over money.”
