A secret television researcher has been convicted of torturing and killing a father of two children on a cannabis farm.

Christopher Guest Moore was convicted of the murder of Brian Waters at Chester Crown Court – more than 18 years after the murder.

Moore, who did covert work with journalist Donal McIntyre, was arrested in Malta in 2019, where he was living under the name Andrew Lamb.

On Thursday, the 43-year-old was convicted of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm to Suleiman Razak, who worked at the Burnt House farm in Tabley, near Knutsford, Cheshire, and was tortured at the same time as the killings in 2003.

Mr. Waters was a drug dealer growing cannabis on the farm, which Moore discovered after following the victim’s 25-year-old son Gavin.

They were tied up, beaten, and hung from the rafters

On June 19, 2003, Mr. Waters was tortured and murdered on the farm in front of his 21-year-old daughter, Natalie and Gavin, while his wife, Julie, was kidnapped from the family home and taken to the site.

Mr. Waters and Mr. Razak, who survived the four-hour ordeal, were tied up, hung from rafters, beaten, dumped into barrels of liquids, staples shot at and assaulted with a metal rod.

When the police arrived at the scene, after a call was made from the phone box, they found a bag containing cigarette ends, beverage bottles, and even a bag of feces that all contained traces of Moore’s DNA.

What does Moore say?

The researcher claimed he was friends with drug dealer John Wilson, one of three men already convicted of the murder because he thought he could sell a story about being a police informant to the media.

He said he thought Wilson might lead him to a cannabis farm that he could film in a documentary.

The court heard how Mr Waters owed Wilson £20,000 in drug debt.

James Raven, who has worked on television with Moore, and Attis Matthews have also been convicted of murder in previous trials.

On giving evidence, Moore, who was a yacht captain and businessman in Malta, claimed that he had gone to the farm that morning to steal the cannabis equipment but left when he quarreled with Raven and realized Wilson, who was not at the scene, discovered he was working undercover.

He left the country for Spain two days later and, after traveling to South Africa, Mozambique and Turkey, settled in Malta.

‘We never lost hope’

Mr Waters’ family said in a statement: “We will never be able to forget the events of that day, and even now, more than 18 years later, we are in pain on a daily basis with constant flashbacks.

“But we have never given up hope and today’s verdict marks the end of a very painful journey in our lives.”

Judge Sir Peter Openshaw said Moore would be sentenced on Friday.
