Pat Cummins for prime minister? “I’ve said for years that I think Imran Khan is now the president of Pakistan,” Langer says. “He was the captain. There’s no reason why a fast bowler can’t be a captain. He’s so composed. A huge improvement on Pat Cummins’s leadership. The way… He’s a star player. But the way he goes is going in his business he’s so respected. Quiet, he’s relaxed and starting well for him. Let’s hope he continues.”

Langer on Travis Head: “What I love about it, if you look back in the history of Australian cricketers, they get dropped and either… two things happen. They either get better or fall by the wayside. Travis Head is another great example. He’s gone away.” I loved how he covered his torso. He was passing. This brings his shot in, cuts him. Playing driving to get his 100. This is one of the hardest shots in the books. He really improved his performance. He’s so composed and it’s great to be back in the team.”

Australia coach Justin Langer speaks with the Channel Seven anchor.

“It was amazing the way the boys went about their business. Nice to cook first in the first morning and yesterday relentlessly. Dave Warner’s partnership with Marnus was amazing. Travis Head is back from not playing for a while, what a role.”

The Ashes Test wouldn’t be without a degree of controversy, and yesterday was no different as it made headlines for the wrong reasons – with the camera system not working without a ball -. More on that below:

WEATHER REPORT: There was a major electrical storm in Brisbane skies last night, but players will be bathing in the sunshine as they walk into the Gabba area in about 20 minutes to start the day’s play.

Preamble

Welcome to Brisbane all of the world, of the few of us here, in a prime position to actually be in this match. Most of the press crew are in Sydney or Melbourne doing it remotely, but a strong few have huddled together in the land of Woolloongabba.

She rarely attributes it, but the sky is pretty blue, the radar is clear, and the forecast is mostly sunny atop 31 degrees on the reasonable scale. The result is Australia 343 to 7 in the second half, behind England with 147 in the first round.

But there is a way to get back into this match for England. The deficit is 196. The weather will be moderate for the next two days. The way is: get those last three wickets fast, then bat like a dream. Make about 400, advance with a few hundred players, and be in the game on the last day.

It might not seem likely at this point, but I think this stadium would be the best pitch to bat on today and tomorrow, with more time in the sun. Considering Australia pushed around 400, England could make one, too.

But of course, that depends on getting those three wickets. We have seen the last few partnerships developed a lot before. Travis Head will be one of the resumed players with 112 not off 95 balls, having achieved one of the fastest Test centuries ever by an Australian. He trusted his hands and eyes last night, played a shot at every ball, and I worked with him. If he could go ahead today, he could close the gate even on that narrow English road to get back into the game.
