‘We’re sitting on a ticking time bomb’ with earthquake-prone buildings

Wellington City Council members are asking the government to help defray the huge costs of strengthening earthquake-prone buildings.

There are 590 earthquake-prone buildings in the city.

The deadlines to boost it go up in 2027 when 228 notices expire.

Wellington City Council does not know the future of hundreds of these buildings, despite predictions that the capital will experience a major earthquake in our lifetime.

City Councilor Sean Rush told Nick Mills Wellington that he is currently struggling to repair basic pipeline infrastructure, not to mention earthquake-prone buildings.

“We need to go to government and get a korero with Grant Robertson, he’s the Wellington Central MP”

In response to a question about how he sleeps at night knowing that people live in apartments with a yellow label, Rush said, “We all live in danger.”

“If there is a big earthquake, people will die. We are sitting on a ticking time bomb,” he said.
