Elon Musk was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year 2021.
The CEO of Tesla has seen his company’s market value rise to more than $1 trillion this year.
Mr. Musk is also the founder and CEO of SpaceX and leads infrastructure startup Neuralink and The Boring Company.
This year he oversaw his electric car company that became the world’s most valuable automaker, and his rocket company sent an all-civilian crew to the edge of space.
“To find solutions to an existential crisis, to embody the possibilities and dangers of an age of tech giants, to lead the most daring and disruptive transformations in society, Elon Musk is TIME’s 2021 Person of the Year,” editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said.
Even Elon Musk’s adventures in spaceflight are a direct line from the first year character, Charles Lindbergh, chosen by the editors in 1927 to celebrate the first solo transatlantic flight across the Atlantic.
Musk has regularly made headlines this year, from hosting Saturday Night Live to his tweets about cryptocurrencies and meme stocks to his 66 million followers on Twitter.
Time magazine said her Person of the Year was “the person who has influenced the news or our lives the most, for better or for worse”.
The magazine named teen pop star Olivia Rodrigo as Player of the Year, American gymnast Simone Biles as Athlete of the Year, and vaccine scientists were named the magazine’s Champions of the Year.
