Mikel Arteta decides to focus on Arsenal’s win over Southampton

Arsenal have reintroduced a number of protocols to combat the spread of Covid-19 after a small number of workers in the training field tested positive for the virus, according to reports.

Arsenal joined the growing list of Premier League clubs affected by the coronavirus over the past week, with local rivals Tottenham being the hardest hit.

Aston Villa, Leicester, Norwich and Manchester United were also affected, leaving the Red Devils’ trip to Brentford on Tuesday night in danger of being postponed.

Arsenal are understood to be keen to avoid an outbreak at their base in London Colney and have imposed a number of measures to tackle the virus.

This includes testing players in their cars before allowing them to train, a protocol previously used during Project Restart in the 2019/20 season.

No Arsenal player has tested positive for coronavirus since Saturday’s win over Southampton

This is according to The Athletic, which adds that no Arsenal player has returned with positive test results as of Monday evening.

Mikel Arteta led his team to a comfortable 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday afternoon and is due to host West Ham on Wednesday night.

Arsenal have already contracted coronavirus this season after four players tested positive on the eve of the opening match with Brentford, in which they lost 2-0.

Meanwhile, the Premier League asked all 20 clubs to return to emergency measures last Wednesday amid growing concerns over the Omicron version.

Manchester United have closed their training ground for 24 hours, and they are engaged in talks with the Premier League chiefs about whether they can proceed with their bee game.

Tottenham have already seen two matches postponed, against Rennes in the Europa League and Brighton domestically, and it is not clear whether Thursday’s clash with Leicester can continue.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has been dealt a heavy blow with eight players and five staff members testing positive last week, and there is no exemption for elite sportsmen when it comes to isolation.

This means that any member of the playing or training team who has returned a positive test must self-isolate for 10 days, along with anyone considered to be in close contact.

However, there remains a significant degree of uncertainty as to what will necessitate the postponement, as the Premier League has not set any threshold for cases.

Arteta thinks playing pieces would be “helpful” to clear up any discrepancy, adding: “You don’t know when you have to play and when you don’t, and we have some examples of that.”

After welcoming West Ham in the Emirates midweek, Arsenal are set to travel to Leicester on Saturday.
