Geminid meteor shower: How and when to see the meteor shower

[ad_1]

Stargazers will be in touch with Monday night as the Geminid meteor shower is set to light up the night sky.

Back in December each year, meteor showers will be visible Monday night into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The shower is known to produce more than 100 meteors per hour at its peak, although light pollution and other factors actually mean the actual number visible is much lower.

Meteors are pieces of debris that enter the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of up to 70 kilometers per second, vaporize and cause streaks of light that we call meteors.

Gemini is very bright, moderately fast and unusual in being multicolored.

They are mainly white, some yellow and a little green, red and blue, in part due to the presence of traces of minerals such as sodium and calcium – the same elements used to make fireworks colorful.

There is no need for binoculars or telescopes as the meteor shower can be seen with the naked eye.

However, it is advised not to look directly at the radiation as this can limit the number of meteors that people can see.

Instead, people should only look to the side in a darkened area of the sky to have a better chance of seeing the screen.

The meteor shower is most visible around 2 a.m. because the point of radiation is highest in the sky at that time.

For those unable to physically view pigeons on Monday night, NASA will broadcast the event live.

Seeing Geminid meteor showers can be difficult for some, with yellow weather warnings in place in some parts of the UK.

Rain is expected in Wales and central England, with some fog in northern England and eastern Scotland.

Northern Ireland will have relative cloud cover, with the east coast expected to be the most visible.
