Cristiano Ronaldo is often seen as an opponent’s worst nightmare in the Champions League – but that is exactly the case for Atletico Madrid.
Ronaldo has won the European competition five times, as well as scoring 140 goals out of 181 appearances and counting.
Of course, the Portuguese won the “Big” for the first time during his first memorable stint at Old Trafford.
Having returned to the Premier League this summer, the 36-year-old former Real Madrid star has scored 13 goals this season – and his controversial Champions League re-drawing has seen him take on a familiar opponent in the La Liga champions.
Manchester United were at the center of this fiasco when footage showed that their ball was not included in the pot for potential rivals in Atletico’s last 16 players.
They were initially drawn alongside Villarreal, but as they advanced from the same group, the first legitimate draw actually saw Ronaldo and his teammates against Lionel Messi and big-spending Paris Saint-Germain.
However, this glaring bug was soon reported, which led to a repaint.
United are now ready to take on Diego Simeone’s men on two feet in February and March of next year – but why exactly are the Spaniards facing a terrifying scenario? You guessed it, it all goes back to Ronaldo.
With an incredibly rich history in the competition, Real – and five-time Ballon d’Or winner – beat their city rivals on five separate occasions between 2014 and 2019.

By winning first in the 2014 final, that result was replaced two years later in the 2016 final.
Not only that, Real Madrid beat Atletico in the 2015 quarter-finals, the 2017 semi-finals, and in the Round of 16 shortly before Ronaldo left Juventus in 2019. No doubt he’s happy to see his back then, and he can. Atletico and its charismatic manager Simeone are lucky for the sixth time at the expense of United?
