Nicola Sturgeon will deliver a statement on coronavirus in the Scottish Parliament today on how the country will deal with the rapidly spreading Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The first secretary will address those involved in strategic planning this afternoon with all indications that she will announce new restrictions.

Sturgeon fish warned at a media briefing last week that Scotland faces the possibility of a “tsunami of infection” as the more transmissible Omicron variant replaces Delta as the dominant strain.

Ministers have already pledged to ramp up the vaccine boosting program with more details expected to be announced today.

All Scots aged 30 to 39 can now book their third dose of the vaccine with the permission expected for children aged 18 to 29 later this week.

Yesterday, the Minister of Health, Hamza Yusuf, announced that changes to the restrictions to combat the Corona virus in Scotland are “inevitable”.

Asked on BBC Good Morning Scotland whether the nation should prepare for new measures to counter the spread of Omicron, Youssef replied: “I think it is inevitable that we will announce additional precautionary measures.

“I’d be hesitant to go into detail on that because we’re working through those details.

“The Prime Minister will speak to Parliament tomorrow first.

“It’s really important that we try to do that with a lot of support from the Treasury that hasn’t been there yet, because we know there has been, of course, an impact on the business.

“We are again discussing preventive measures, and the prime minister will announce the details of that tomorrow,” he added.
