The Premier League said the Manchester United match at Brentford has been postponed following ‘directions from medical advisors due to the exceptional circumstances of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak’ at the club.
United closed first-team operations at their Carrington training complex for 24 hours on Monday after a number of players and staff returned positive lateral flow tests.
The Manchester Evening News has learned of at least four positive cases, but the club has refused to say how many players and staff have tested positive for the virus.
United had been discussing with the Premier League over whether the Brentford match would go ahead and it was confirmed that the 7:30 p.m. match had been postponed just before midnight.
The Premier League said in a statement: “The Premier League’s board of directors has decided to postpone the Brentford home match against Manchester United, scheduled for Tuesday 14 December at 19.30 GMT.
“The decision was made following guidance from medical advisors due to the exceptional circumstances of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within the Manchester United squad.

“First team operations at the club’s Carrington training complex have been closed today to help control the outbreak and reduce the risk of further infection among players and staff.
“The League wishes a speedy recovery to these players and staff infected with COVID-19. The postponed match will be rearranged in due course.
“With priority given to the health of players and staff, and in light of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced emergency measures.
“These include protocols such as frequent screening, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing and limiting treatment time.”
It is understood that some United players under the age of 23 have tested positive for the virus. The academy and women’s teams are able to continue training at Carrington due to the separation of bubbles.
A new date for the match has not been announced.
