A tsunami warning was issued for Indonesia after a strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday. The US Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at 0320 GMT, with its epicenter 112 km north of the town of Momiri and at a depth of 18.4 km under the sea floor.
Although the warning has been lifted and no significant damage or deaths have been reported so far, authorities have urged caution. Authorities said that aftershocks of a magnitude of 5.6 from the quake were felt in the city of Larantuka. Just ten days ago, a deadly volcanic eruption at Mount Semeru on the island of Java in Indonesia killed nearly 50 people.
Here are some photos taken by residents during the earthquake:
Indonesia, a disaster-prone nation, suffers from frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin collide.
Among the series of deadly earthquakes in Indonesia, the 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people in South and Southeast Asia.
In 2018, another strong earthquake hit the island of Lombok, and several more tremors followed over the next two weeks, killing more than 550 people. Later that year, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Palu on the island of Sulawesi left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.
