Succession Series Season 3 Episode 9: The Episode 4 streak that foreshadowed Tom and Schiff’s final moment

Caliphate fans highlight a scene that directly foreshadowed the dramatic end of Season 3.

On Sunday (December 12), HBO broadcast the finale of the final season of the hit show, which has been critically acclaimed by fans.

The season finale saw Logan Roy (Brian Cox) shut down his sons while negotiating a peer merger with Go-Jo founder Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård).

After suspicions about a deal grow behind their backs, Schiff (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong) decide to team up to stage a coup and prevent their father from striking the deal thanks to a clause in his divorce settlement with their mother, Caroline (Harriet Walter).

On their way to Logan, Schiff calls her husband, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) to fill out the plan, which he says he’s on board with. A later scene shows Tom telling Greg (Nicholas Brown) that he has “things to do” and asking if he’d like to join him in making a “deal with the devil”.

However, the plan goes awry when Schiff, Roman and Kendall’s ambush backfires after it’s revealed that he’s renegotiated a settlement clause with Caroline – and that they’ve been separated from their father.

Dividing into two and two together, Schiff works out that Logan must have called on Caroline after being warned of their impending arrival – and at this moment, Tom arrives to get a good pat on the back from Logan.

Throughout the season, Tom has proven his loyalty to Logan – even going so far as to present himself as the front man for the wrongs of Roy’s company if anyone needs to go to jail.

This was what further distanced him from Schiff, who supported Tom’s decision but then failed to empathize with his plight. It was noted that Schiff looked frustrated when it was revealed that Tom would not go to prison.

But it’s a specific callback to the previous episode that predicted the final ending outcome.

It occurs in the fourth episode of season three when Tom recounts the Roman legend of Nero and Sporus. He told Greg, “Well, Nero pushed his wife down the stairs, then castrated Sporus and married him instead.”

In one of the season’s most quoted lines, he told Greg, “I was going to castrate you in a heartbeat.”

Moving on to the end, Tom clearly warned Logan of the impending ambush, nicknamed Greg “Sporus.”

After the episode, many fans highlighted the callback on social media, as well as several other clues that hinted at Tom’s infidelity.

The third succession season is available to own digitally and stream on NOW. The show will return for a fourth season.
