More than a million people are likely to be isolated with the Covid-19 virus on Christmas Day after England’s chief medical officer warned that Omicron was spreading “incredibly fast”.
The scale of the infection led supermarkets to warn of more supply chain problems yesterday as they faced the prospect of mass employee absenteeism.
Ministers are also concerned that rising infection rates will sicken large numbers of workers and disrupt the summer “pandemic,” even if only those infected with the coronavirus have to be isolated.
Yesterday, 59,610 cases were confirmed and levels are expected to soon surpass the daily record of 68,053, set in January. At least a fifth of confirmed cases have been attributed to Omicron but health chiefs believe that’s true
