Lawmakers said COVID-19 may be a modified virus that may have leaked from a Wuhan lab

Covid may be a genetically modified man-made virus – and lawmakers have now been told it is ‘more likely than not’ that it leaked from a Wuhan lab.

Dr Alina Chan, who specializes in gene therapy and cell engineering at MIT and Harvard University, made the allegations when she presented evidence to the British Parliament’s Science and Technology Select Committee.

Dr Chan said: “I think laboratory origin is most likely. At the moment, it is not safe for people who know the origin of the epidemic to come forward. But we live in an age where there is so much information stored that it will eventually come to light.”

“We have heard from many top virologists that a genetically modified origin is plausible and this includes virologists who made modifications to the first SARS virus.

“We know that this virus has a unique feature, called an instantaneous split site, and without this feature this could not have caused this epidemic.

“A proposal was leaked showing that EcoHealth and the Wuhan Institute of Virology were developing a pipeline to introduce new furin cleavage sites. So, you find those scientists who said in early 2018 ‘I will put horns on horses’ and at the end of 2019 a rhinoceros appears in Wuhan.”

Viscount Ridley also said he also believes the lab leak is now the likely origin.

Lord, who co-authored a book on the origin of the virus with Dr Chan, told MPs: “I also think it’s more likely than not because we have to face the truth two months later we knew the origins of SARS, and after two months we learned that Mers was going through camels, but after Two years ago we haven’t found a single infected animal that could be the progenitor, which is incredibly surprising.

We need to know this so we can prevent the next pandemic. We need to know whether laboratories should be tightened or whether we should tighten regulations around wildlife markets. At the moment we don’t do that either.

“We also need to know to deter bad actors who watch this episode and think that unleashing the pandemic is something they can get away with.

“We now know that trials were being conducted at Biosecurity Level 2 (similar to a dentist’s office) resulting in a 10,000-fold increase in virus infection and three or four times their lethality. The important thing is to stop doing these risky trials.”
