TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Geology Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently monitoring volcanic activities in the vicinity of the epicenter of the 7.4-magnitude East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) earthquake on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
The agency is overseeing the changes taking place across Mount El Lutolouk in the Limbata District, which is currently at Alert Level 1 (Siaga).
The coordinator of the Geology Agency for Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation, Subartoyo, said the agency is hopeful that the latest earthquake will not cause close rifts in the vicinity, which include the 1992 Tsunami earthquake.
“The earthquake is very massive, in a number of cases in the past it could have sparked other rifts or earthquake sources. But we really hope it doesn’t,” he said.
Subartoyo said the area is still recording frequent aftershocks until Wednesday, December 15, 2021, and is expected to last as long as the devastating 2008 earthquake in Palu.
Subartoyo urged people to remain calm as aftershocks are expected to be much less than the force released in Tuesday’s quake.
