The default command line in Windows 11 is compatible with Mac and Linux operating systems

Microsoft is making a major change to its command line experience in Windows 11, with the company changing the default to Windows Terminal. This creates a more competitive experience with Mac and Linux.

The company released a blog post about Windows Terminal, and talked about plans for the future. “Over the course of 2022, we plan to make Windows Terminal the default experience on Windows 11 devices. We will start with the Windows Insider Program and start moving through the episodes until we reach everyone on Windows 11,” Microsoft said.

Of course, if you are a big fan of Windows Terminal and want to use it now, you can change the default setting in Windows 11. There are three places you can change it: the Developer Settings page for Windows Settings, within Windows Terminal Settings on the Startup page, and within the Windows Console Host properties page .

Once Microsoft changes your default command line experience to Windows Terminal, you can go to those same places to go back again if you don’t like Windows Terminal or are using some kind of old program that relies on a different command line.

This is an important change for Microsoft. As the company explained, “Beginning at the dawn of Windows, the default terminal emulator has always been the Windows Console Host, conhost.exe.”
