Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Green said text messages sent to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows during the Jan. 6 Capitol riots urge him to persuade President Donald Trump to cancel his supporters to prove that Mr. Trump is innocent of any crime. Irregularities in connection with the riots.
Trump was impeached on charges of sedition by the House of Representatives in February of this year, but the former president was acquitted in the Senate trial.
Fox News hosts, including Laura Ingraham, Brian Kilmeade and Sean Hannity, texted Mr. Meadows, asking him to get the then president to speak out against the riots, and telling his followers to stop.
“I think the text messages just show that President Trump is innocent,” Green told right-wing OAN on Tuesday. “We are all innocent. The riots shouldn’t have happened and we were all against it like we said all along.”
The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to detain Mr. Meadows in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the Jan. 6 Select Committee of Inquiry.
The two Republicans serving on the committee, Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, voted with Democrats to despise Meadows, with the final score 222 to 208.
The Department of Justice will now decide whether or not to pursue the matter. Contempt of Congress, which is a misdemeanor, can result in imprisonment for up to a year and a fine of up to $100,000.
When Greene spoke out against the Meadows contempt ruling, she said, “I oppose this decision to prosecute Mark Meadows in contempt of Congress because he is subject to nothing but kangaroo court. Congress’s job is to make laws, not enforce them.”
“Exactly what I’ve seen, I haven’t spoken to anyone, seems to me to be despised,” President Joe Biden said on Wednesday.
Last week, just days after saying he would cooperate with the selection committee, Meadows changed his mind, saying the House committee was trying to get him to talk about matters Trump said were protected by executive privilege. The allegations of executive privilege for both Meadows and Trump have been challenged in the courts and by constitutional scholars.
“If you’re making excuses to avoid cooperating with our investigation, you’re making excuses to hide the truth from the American people about what happened on January 6th,” Representative Benny Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, said during the House debate. . “You make excuses as part of the coverage.”
“The sixth of January is unprecedented,” Ms. Cheney said. “There has never been a stronger case in our nation’s history for a congressional investigation into the actions of a former president. This body must investigate the facts in detail, and we are entitled to ask Mr. Meadows for the unmarked material he has produced for us.”
The transcripts were released Monday by the House Select Committee.
“He has to condemn this *** ASAP.” Donald Trump Jr. wrote to Meadows: “The Capitol Police tweet is not enough.”
“I’m pushing it hard,” replied Mr. Meadows. “I agree.”
“We need the Oval Office address. He has to drive now,” Trump Jr. added. “It has gone too far and out of control.”
“Mark, the president has to tell the people on the Capitol to go home,” Ingraham wrote. “It hurts us all. It destroys his legacy.”
“Please, make it appear on TV. Destroy everything you’ve accomplished,” Kilmaid wrote in a text message.
“Can he make a statement? Ask the people to leave the Capitol,” Hannity asked Mr. Meadows.
