In each case, Brockhill, of Hawthorn Close, Keighley, and Smith, of Wesley Place, Halifax Road, Keighley, were able to convince social workers that the labels on Star were accidental or that the complaints were maliciously made by people they disliked their relationship.
Prosecutors described how the injuries that caused Starr’s death included severe damage to her abdominal cavity “caused by a blow or heavy and forceful blows, either in the form of punching, stabbing or kicking in the abdomen.”
The jurors also heard that there were other injuries to her body, which means that “Starr had in her short life suffered a number of serious injuries at different times.”
The jury was shown a series of videos that prosecutors said showed Starr being assaulted, abused or humiliated, often posted on social media.
Smith was acquitted of the murder but convicted of causing or allowing the child’s death – a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 14 years.
But mitigating on Wednesday, Zafar Ali QC, told Smith: “She herself is the victim of the murder, after she lost her daughter.
“It is clear that she was not aware of the seriousness of the assaults against her daughter.
Ali asked the judge to take into account a number of things before sentencing Smith, including that she had no previous convictions and that she “regretted her willful mistreatment of Starr”.
