Distance learning for schools after Christmas

Jack Seargeant MS asked the Prime Minister what education will look like next year, pointing to the news that schools are preparing to return to distance learning in the new year.

Drakeford said that planning for two days at the start of the next semester, Jeremy Miles urged schools to plan on two different bases:

1) Planning for the presence of children in schools but with a high level of mitigation, decided at the local level. Mr. Miles told schools to plan for the maximum level of mitigation.

2) The 2020 Coronavirus Act Notice will allow schools to arrange the start and end times for the start of the new semester, something that has been used earlier in the pandemic

Mr. Miles also asked the chairs to plan for a distance learning scenario.

Mr. Druckford Siad thought this was “quite reasonable”.

He said staff availability will be as acute in schools as it is in the health service, and reinforcements will be provided to all staff by the end of the year. “We are doing everything we can,” he said, to protect the workforce, but the speed with which Omicron will outlast us will mean that some schools will need to plan for their individual situations.
