Marnus Labuschagne approaches the sixth century to the test after being dropped in 21 and 95

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne awakened half-pods – and drops Jos Buttler – gave Australia the advantage on day one of the second pink ball test in Adelaide as they closed out at 221-2.

Australia captain Pat Cummins has been identified as a close contact with Covid-19 after he sat near someone carrying the virus during an evening meal in town, so vice captain Steve Smith stepped up to captain the team for the first time since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

Smith elected to bat after winning the toss and saw Warner (95 of 167) and Lapushagne (95 no of 275) put 172 into the second wicket in Australia, before hitting the reserve captain 18 not of 71 balls once Warner fired Ben Stokes to Stuart Broad in the cover To fall in the 1990s for the second consecutive Test after 94 in Brisbane.

Labuschagne was brought down by Stokes’ England wicketkeeper Butler on 21 and then again by the same man late in the day on 95 after James Anderson caused an outside lead with the second fresh ball.

Australia – who top the five-game series 1-0 after winning nine wickets at The Gabba last week – are doing well, with England’s five-speed attack, and Mark Wood missing the rest, possibly guilty of bowling too. In short, especially under the spotlight with the old ball.

David Warner dropped five games short of a hundred twenty-fifth Test

It was slow at first as the returning Broad and Anderson limited the home team to 11-1 from their first 10, with Broad celebrating his 150th Test appearance with Marcus Harris’ share (3) as Butler took an amazing one-handed on the side of the leg – a moment in contradiction Stark with subsequent impurities that saved Lapuchagne.

Warner took 20 balls to get the mark, 53 to reach double figures, and scored the third slowest of 32 Tests in the 1950s from 108 balls—innings he wasn’t able to turn into the 25 tons when he fell under the spotlight.

David Warner played excellent across 95 (167), but would be greatly disappointed by his dismissal – only one ball he encountered was shorter *and wider* than a wicket. #AshesIGcom pic.twitter.com/pcPS82najh

In the meantime, Labuschagne was subjected to a storm of short deliveries from Stokes, who took on the role of enforcer in England in the absence of the fastest throwing player, Wood, while also playing and missing several times.

England have engaged in a slow pitch offering little action – Rod Stokes is running less than three runs and Anderson less than two – but it lacks variety with no quick-hearted or dizzy front-line man in the squad.

The return of Anderson and Broad meant that the visitors left Wood and left-handed Jack Leach, deleting each of which could come back to bite the Tourists as they try to level the streak and capture 11-game winning streak in the Tests in Australia – their last victory coming at Sydney Cricket Ground in January. 2011.

The part-time spinner Root found a notable turn on day one, while Australia’s non-rotator Nathan Lyon took 19 wickets for an average of 25.78 in the pink ball tests in Adelaide.

Leitch or Broad emerged England’s only selection dilemma and it was the latter who got the nod as he made his Test debut since August and became the 10th man and third Englishman after Anderson and Sir Alistair Cook, to 150 Test appearances.

Broad would have enjoyed bowling at Warner after he was knocked out seven times during the 2019 Ashes series in England – but it was the batting’s opening partner, Harris, who cheaply removed him from his usual left-handed wicket-around style.

Harris successfully overturned Broad’s lbw ejection in the sixth goal – the ball was set to go past the stem of the leg – but fell into eighth as he veered down the side of the leg and Butler took a fine one-handed catch that jumped into place.

It looks like England decided the best length would be shorter under the spotlight with the Pink Ball.

England’s attack often beat the bats but failed to raise the trailing edges, perhaps confirming that they were at least partly short.

The short-pitched approach from Stokes did cause Labuschagne to rattle, though, with Australia No. 3 pinned to toes and ribs in the first session and then pulling Stokes behind the underside of the leg in the second—only for Butler to jump the chance to jump on his left.

Australia would have been 62-2 had Labuschigny been sent off at the time, but it rolled to 176 before dropping the next wicket – Warner the man left when he fired Stokes’ short, wide ball to Broad on the far side at 95.

Butler couldn’t hold on to a routine chance when Labuchagni sprinted off the back foot in the 95th, with the batter holder with Captain Smith now worth 45 of 150 deliveries.
