Liverpool vs Newcastle predicted the start of Joe Gomez and Jurgen Klopp starts the January plan

Liverpool will host Newcastle United at Anfield tonight, in a match famous for its goals. In the history of the Premier League, this is one of the top five games in terms of goal-scoring, producing on average more than three goals per game. No one would bet that this pattern would continue, with Newcastle continuing to stand under Eddie Howe, and Liverpool in deadly shape in front of goal.

Alongside Chelsea, Jurgen Klopp and his team had to wait in the Premier League title race, as Man City opened the top four with four points thanks to an emphatic 7-0 win over Leeds United on Tuesday. As Thomas Tuchel looks to close the gap against Everton, Liverpool will look to get one point closer to the leaders once again.

Roberto Firmino is back in training. Curtis Jones is also close to a comeback, although Klopp suggested that match could come too soon for him.

James Martin – Konate and Gomez are coming

Liverpool will be sure to win here. Most likely a big win. New Newcastle United after the 4-0 defeat at the hands of Leicester City. Football raises a lot of curiosity, but the simple fact is that this is a confrontation between the team that scores the most goals and the team that concedes the most. Klopp will be confident enough to spin a bit, with half an eye on Spurs in three days.

In the back, Alison, of course, keeps his place, but in front of him can be an unfamiliar pair. Klopp mentioned in his press conference that Joe Gomez has had an unfortunate time this year, between injuries and the strength of the competition for places – he could get a rare opportunity here, perhaps alongside fellow central defender Ibrahima Konate.

The manager may be tempted to play with Costas Tsimikas, but on a balanced note, it looks like the usual defenders will likely get the nod, with the possibility of substitutions if Liverpool make a comfortable lead.

The midfield looks more familiar, and Klopp is likely to deal with the trusted trio who have worked so well together later. Firmino and Thiago still lost a match when playing together, while Jordan Henderson thrived in a more offensive role.

Up front, Roberto Firmino returns, with a somewhat relaxed gameplay that’s a perfect way to smooth his comeback. Diogo Jota is bound to come off the bench, but could get a little rest ahead of Spurs.

Keifer MacDonald – Oxlade-Chamberlain gave the test

I can see Klopp hammering the changes in Newcastle’s visit to Anfield as we get halfway to a grueling fixture schedule in December.

Hopefully there will be a first Premier League start to the season for Gomez who has yet to recover from his injury last season. Like Oxlade-Chamberlain, it looks like the heart of the quarter needs a constant run of games in order to build itself up and show its true potential. So, with the Cup quarter-finals in mind next week, it would be nice to see him from off the field against the Magpies who haven’t bothered many teams in the final third of this season.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was disappointed in a more advanced position against Aston Villa on Saturday, so bringing him back into his favorite midfield role and being able to drive with the ball from deep against what is expected to be a low block would be very beneficial.

No doubt Klopp will have one eye on Sunday’s game against Tottenham and I think if Origi is fit he will get a nod after his improvement. However, it does seem logical that Jota gets the nod before Firmino, as the Brazilian has just returned to training.

Dave Powell – Time to prepare for January

Newcastle at home is by no means a gimmick.

The Magpies have been sad this season, a record with just one win in 16 which is testament to that fact, but under Eddie Howe and backed by PIF’s takeover of PIF, they will produce a surprise at Anfield to bolster their survival bid.

However, the truth is that Liverpool are far apart when it comes to the quality in the squad. And while the Africa Cup of Nations may be in the air according to reports, Klopp might be wise to consider getting his sidelined players into the groove early as he will likely rely heavily on his tried and trusted members of his squad in January.

Starts Naby Keita, Salah and Mane. With all three likely to be out for a month soon, the Reds need to get what they can get out of it as best they can.

Konate was fantastic against Milan and deserves the chance to fight for the shirt again, and the partnership with Van Dijk should prove more than strong enough to fend off the limited offensive threat posed by Newcastle. Seeing how Konaté handles such a cunning character as Callum Wilson would be interesting.

Divock Origi starts for me because he needs to play before January arrives if Salah and Mane are not present. He will need to lubricate the gears and against a team with a shady defense like Newcastle, this presents an opportunity for him to get into his midfield. Klopp said the striker has a “little problem” so if he is not available Takumi Minamino may be given a chance to build momentum.

Same goes for Oxlade-Chamberlain replacing Henderson. The England midfielder will be counted on in the coming weeks to provide that calm and be such a steady presence. While there are options, and while the opponent favors them, taking advantage of the rotation before January will be key.
