Boris Johnson has denied imposing a ban by “going incognito” after warning people to think carefully before socializing over Christmas.
Speaking on a visit to a vaccine site in Ramsgate, the prime minister said the government’s approach was different from last year – when lockdowns were imposed.
This comes after figures in the hospitality sector criticized the government for actually telling people to stay away while not providing any government support for their struggling businesses.
Asked if he was doing a shutdown by stealth, Johnson told reporters: “No – because what we’re saying is, this is very different from last year.
“Because what we have is the added protection of vaccines and the ability to get tested, so if you want to do something, if you want to go to an event or a party, the logical thing to do – if that’s a priority – the sensible thing to do is to Test and make sure to be careful.
“But we don’t say we want to cancel things, we don’t shut things down, and the quickest way back to normalcy is through reinforcement.”
Last year the government was forced to shut down guest accommodations to limit the spread of the new wave of Covid in the UK.
But ministers have given huge support to such leave payments – which they have so far been reluctant to make available despite sector warnings.
Greg Parmley, CEO of the Live Music Venue Trade Association, said: “The current shutdown by stealth is rapidly pushing the live music sector to the edge.
“We are now facing a devastating blow as individual venues scramble to cover the escalating costs of Covid-related cancellations, which will inevitably lead to permanent closures.
“The government must step up and offer a whole lot of financial assistance now, if it is to avoid much-loved live music venues and businesses closing for good.”

In lieu of lockdown measures, the government has urged people to be selective about when to socialize and to get a booster dose.
Also speaking Thursday, the Liberal Democratic Front Wendy Chamberlain said MPs should not go home at Christmas until “we agree a deal to keep our bars, cafes and restaurants alive”.
“Bar owners, waiters and chefs need help now,” she said. “How can we look the local homeowner in the eye and tell them Parliament collapsed for Christmas when they’re about to collapse?”
Urging action, Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who is said to be abroad, said: “The chancellor must board the next plane back from the California flight to move heaven and earth to save the hospitality sector on the brink of collapse.
I would be willing to pass any new business support package in Parliament that the government presents. Move on the chancellor, the clock is ticking.”
