OnePlus’ latest true wireless earbuds offer noise canceling for $99

OnePlus’ latest pair of true wireless earbuds is the $99 OnePlus Buds Z2. It’s double the $49.99 OnePlus Buds Z price from last year but now benefits from active noise cancellation, a shorter stem, and a lightweight build. It’s now available in the US and will be released in the UK and EU on December 20 for £99 and €99, respectively.

Although the Buds Z2’s price is about halfway between the Buds Z and the more premium $150 OnePlus Buds Pro, it actually has better battery life than both. Battery life from the earbuds themselves is about five hours with ANC turned on, rising to seven hours when turned off, and along with the case you get up to 38 hours total (down to 27 hours with ANC turned on). In contrast, Buds Z offered five hour buds and up to 20 hours including the case. Buds Pro offer seven hours of playback with the ANC off, five hours with it turned on, and up to 31 hours when combined with the case.

Elsewhere, the Buds Z2 matches many of the Buds Pro’s specifications, despite its reasonable price. They offer the same 94ms response time when used in Pro Game Mode, there are still three microphones in each earbud, and they come in either black or white, and they have the same 11mm drivers as the Buds Pro headphones. But Buds Z2 does not offer wireless charging, which is a feature found in Buds Pro.

The $99 price tag is proving increasingly competitive for true wireless earbuds with noise cancellation. Most notably, the Nothing’s Ear 1 earphones, which come from new OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, offer noise cancellation as well as wireless charging support at the same price. Increasingly, you don’t have to pay more than $100 to get a feature-rich pair of true wireless earbuds.
