Scientific advisers to Nicola Sturgeon have said closing the temporary ‘circuit breaker’ is the only way to save Christmas and protect the NHS.

The Omicron variant rose from 15 per cent of cases in Scotland to 45 per cent in less than a week, prompting calls for tougher action to stop its spread. It is set to become the dominant breed in the country today.

There are 663 confirmed cases of Omicron in Scotland, up from 110 on December 10, and 2,553 probable cases detected in PCR swabs, up from 737 six days ago.

The Prime Minister told MSPs: “Omicron is spreading exceptionally fast, much faster than anything tested so far in the pandemic. I am very concerned about scale and immediacy.
