Wales is set to see a return to stricter Covid restrictions after Christmas after an increase in Omicron cases in the UK.

Nightclubs will be closed and social distancing service will be reintroduced from December 27.

The Prime Minister announced a mixture of advice over the Christmas period and new regulations to be followed as part of a “two-stage plan”.

Two-meter social distancing measures will be mandatory in stores and businesses, along with measures that include one-way systems and physical barriers to protect customers and employees.

The regulations will also be changed to include the requirement to work from home where possible.

In England, nightclubs and other big night spots remain open – but people must show an NHS Covid clearance or proof of a negative lateral flow test.

Until December 27, the Welsh government is encouraging people to take five steps to limit the spread of coronavirus.

People are asked to do a lateral flow test before they go shopping or meet people and are asked to meet people outdoors where possible.

On Thursday, Wales reported another 2,889 cases of COVID-19 and 33 cases of Omicron.

The total number of the new variant in Wales is now 95 cases.

“A rapid increase is expected over the coming days and weeks,” said Dr Meng Khao, from Public Health Wales.

First Minister Mark Druckford said: “Delta will remain the leading cause of coronavirus infection in Wales until Christmas. But we are seeing Omicron cases increasing rapidly every day in Wales – and across the UK.

“We need a plan to keep us safe this Christmas and we need stronger measures to protect us afterward, as we prepare for a major wave of omicron infections.

“Omicron poses a new threat to our health and safety. It is the most serious development in the epidemic to date.

“It is something that we must take seriously. We will continue to take proportionate measures to protect people’s lives and livelihoods.

“This is a virus that thrives on human contact. Every contact we have is an opportunity for us to spread or catch the virus.”

The changes for companies come with the announcement that up to £60m will be available to support those affected by the new measures.

He added, “A younger Christmas this year is a safer Christmas. The fewer people we see, the less chance we have of contracting or transmitting the virus.”

“Please enjoy Christmas with your closest and loved ones – and consider meeting with wider circles of friends when the threat of the Omicron variant is no longer there.

“I would also like to thank the thousands of people who will be working this Christmas to keep us safe – especially those who have canceled plans to work in vaccination centers across Wales to increase our protection against this horrific virus.”
