Earthquake hits Gulf Islands and Greater Victoria

A small earthquake rocked homes in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia early Friday and was felt by residents of the Greater Victoria region.

Seismology Canada said the quake, which occurred at 4:13 a.m. PT, measured 3.5 on the Richter scale. She said there were no reports of damage.

The US Geological Survey, which measured the earthquake’s magnitude as 3.6, reported that the epicenter was below the southern island of Galliano at a depth of 17.3 km.

Mary Wellman, a resident of Salt Spring Island, said she and her husband woke up to a strong jolt and a loud bang.

“It felt like a big truck had crashed into the house,” Wellman said. “We jumped out of bed and my husband thought maybe a tree had fallen in the house…then we realized it was an earthquake.”

“Here in Sydney there was a sudden deep noise with goosebumps as if a big car had hit the building,” Martha Scott wrote in an email to CBC.

Erin Crampton, of North Saanich, told CBC, “There was a thunder-like rumble, shaking and creaking…definitely a reminder of the earthquake’s replenishment.”

The Central Saanich Fire Department has tweeted a message urging residents to prepare for earthquakes.
