Downing Street plunged into more turmoil tonight after the chief civil servant appointed by Boris Johnson to lead an important investigation was forced to resign.
Cabinet Secretary Simon Case has resigned from the investigation into Christmas parties in Downing Street after it was found that his office housed an office during the closure.
Johnson admitted that public anger at the parties last year contributed to the Conservative capitulation in today’s North Shropshire by-election, a seat he held for 200 years.
Downing Street’s hopes for a clean bill of health were dashed on the parties by an investigation led by Case, the head of the civil service, after The Times revealed that his office organized a party on December 17 last year.
