A man has been charged with murder and arson after a fire that killed one person in Reading.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in a building in Row Court, Grovelands Road, at about 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Thames Valley Police said Hakim Kigondo, 31, a former employee of Rowe Court, was charged with murder and arson with intent to endanger life Friday night.
He was remanded in custody to appear in Reading Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
One person was confirmed dead after the fire, and two people are still missing.
The fire service first received a report of the fire at 2.51 a.m. Upon arrival, the crews found a fire that affected all levels of the four-storey building.
Doug Buchanan, assistant chief firefighting officer with the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said 50 firefighters had been deployed and that the team had rescued a resident from the building using a ladder. Emergency call handlers gave fire escape tips to another resident to enable them to safely exit the property.
