The Epic Games Store once again features endless $10 discount coupons for its duration. Besides the sale price cuts, there are some deals that have surprised me.
Take Chivalry 2, my favorite game of the year: It’s $16.79 right now. The Inscryption scary card game is $5.99. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy costs $38.99. Battlefield 2042, a game with very negative user reviews which I enjoy nonetheless, is $29.59 with discount and coupon. (It’s also free for the weekend on Steam now if you just want to try it out, though).
These are the prices you’ll see in your cart (an innovative feature recently added to the Epic Games Store), but not on the store page, where the $10 discount coupons don’t count. It hardly makes sense to call them “coupons” really, because everything happens automatically: Any game that currently costs $14.99 or more will get you a $10 discount at check-out. This is true whether the current price is a discounted price or not; It should be $14.99 or more currently. (In the UK, the minimum is £13.99.)
There is no limit to the number of $10 coupons you can use, except for any limit naturally imposed by the total number of games in the Epic Games Store that cost $14.99 or more. I’m not sure about it, but the store has come a long way since it launched with just a few games a few years ago. It is well equipped.
Epic also offers a free game every day for 15 days. You can now claim Shenmue 3, which was released last year.
We didn’t really need to examine court documents to find out, but earlier this year in an Epic v Apple trial it was confirmed that Epic had intentionally incurred huge losses on the Epic Games Store in an effort to attract new users, particularly those who had spent years Building libraries on Steam. The main expenses were free game giveaways and, arguably, semi-exclusive deals that keep games like Chivalry 2 and Hitman 3 off Steam for a year.
The user acquisition and retention spending spree is made possible by the billions Epic has made from Fortnite, so I think we have Fortnite players and their unquenchable thirst for showmanship to thank Hitman 3 for being $13.99 at checkout now. It’s another one of our favorite games of 2021.
The Epic sale and coupons will last for three weeks, ending January 6, so there’s no need to take advantage of that. The Steam Winter Sale starts next week and will likely feature equivalent discounts on games appearing in both stores — although Steam hasn’t matched $10 Epic coupons in the past.
