How Covid rates in the North East compare to London as ‘major accident’ announced

A major incident was announced in London amid “great concern” over the spread of the Omicron coronavirus through the capital.

It comes after London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was “deeply concerned” about staff absenteeism in vital public services including the NHS, the fire service and the police due to cases rising rapidly.

The mayor’s office said announcing a major incident would allow authorities to work together and support each other to limit service outages and allow more time to give backing cakes.

Mr Khan said: “The increase in Omicron variant cases across our capital is very worrying, so we are once again announcing a major incident due to the Covid-19 threat to our city.

“The Omicron variant quickly became dominant, with cases increasing rapidly and the number of patients in our hospitals with Covid-19 increasing again.

“We are already feeling the impact across the capital, and while we are still learning about this alternative, it is right that the major agencies in London are working closely together to reduce the impact on our city, including by helping to protect a vital vaccination programme.”

Of the 377 localities across the UK, 241 have seen a week-on-week rise in Covid-19 rates.

London’s Lambeth still has the highest rate in the UK, with 4,021 new cases in the seven days to December 13 – the equivalent of 1,249.5 per 100,000 people.

That’s up from 539.1 in the seven days through December 6.

Wandsworth in London has the second highest rate, rising from 573.5 to 1178.8, with 3,887 new cases.

Southwark in London has the third highest rate, rising from 509.3 to 1160.3, with 3,713 new cases.
