Brian May said he “made the wrong decision” to attend a social gathering without a mask after contracting Covid-19.

Quinn’s guitarist has tested positive for the virus, as he shared the results of his side-streaming test on Instagram.

He said he feels “really terrible” and it’s like “the worst flu you can imagine” before revealing how he thinks he got it.

May told his Instagram followers that he attended a friend’s birthday meal with his wife, former EastEnders star Anita Dobson, with a small group of friends, believing they were “in a safe bubble”.

“It’s kind of ironic to me,” he said, explaining that the couple had been “very, very careful” for the “past 20 months.”

And he continued: Then last Saturday [11 December]. We decided we were going to a birthday brunch and thought, OK, this is the last social function we’re going to – not that we’re going to many anyway, we’re going to have the chance, everybody’s going to triple, everybody’s going be with one of these things [lateral flow test] Who says you’ll be negative in the morning.”

She had said, “It looks like it’s set up very safely, but of course you kind of know you’re taking a risk and so we all went to the party.”

Citing Prof Chris Whitty’s advice earlier this week instructing the country to “decide what your priorities are” due to rising Covid rates, May said: “We did, and we may have made the wrong decision.”

“It looked like a safe situation,” he said, adding, “You have negative tests, so what could possibly go wrong?

“The new variant seems to be so incredibly transmissible that I’m not even sure it was safe – this thing is spreading at an alarming rate.”

He added, “You really don’t want to spoil your birthday.”

May said eight people at the party had tested positive and that the lateral flow test had taken three days to show a positive result.
