An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck northern Italy’s Lombardy region on Saturday (18), raising concerns among residents, although it did not cause major damage, the National Institute of Volcanology and Geophysics (INGV) reported.
The earthquake was felt by people at 11:34 am local time (7:34 am GMT) in Bergamo province. So far, there are no reports of deaths, injuries or damage to infrastructure.
According to the Italian Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded in the small municipality of Punete Soto, a town of 6000 inhabitants in Bergamo, at a depth of 26 kilometers.
This phenomenon was felt throughout the Lombardy region. In Milan, where a second tremor was recorded – less severe than the first – many people took to the streets in fright.
This time, the epicenter was in Osio Soto, at 11:57 a.m. local time (7:57 a.m. Brasilia time), at a depth of 24.9 kilometers, according to INGV data. The magnitude of the aftershock was 2.2.
Italian rapper Fedez and his wife Chiara Ferragni, one of the world’s most famous influencers, also got frightened and took to the streets.
In a video on Instagram, it is possible to see the singer already returning to his building, in the Citylife district of Milan, where he explains that many citizens have left their homes due to the earthquake.
Nor did the earthquake that was felt in Milan, at least according to local firefighters and police. However, the county hopes to refresh the situation as the earthquake was strongly felt in the Vimercate area of Brianza.
Many Italians said that during the earthquake, lamps moved, mirrors vibrated, and water heaters slammed. An accident caused by a panic in front of a supermarket in Vimercate has also been reported. Some people took to the streets for fear of landslides.
In Treviglio, a few kilometers from the epicenter, students from at least two schools were evacuated.
The earthquake was also clearly felt in Lecco, where dozens of calls were made to fire department stations, but no damage was recorded.
Students from Lecco Schools have been taken out of institutes as a precaution, as required by safety protocol. The biggest concern was with the families who stayed on the upper floors of the condominiums.
