Il Divo singer Carlos Marin dies of Covid at the age of 53

The band announced that Spanish Il Divo singer, Carlos Marin, has died in a hospital in Manchester, after an apparent battle with Covid-19.

The 53-year-old, who was vaccinated, contracted the virus on December 7 according to Spanish media.

The group announced on Twitter: “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away.”

“He will be missed by his friends, family and fans.

“There will never be another voice or soul like Carlos.”

Il Divo, an operatic pop version of the popular Three Tenors, was formed in 2003 by Simon Cowell.

The group added, “For 17 years, the four of us have been on this wonderful trip from Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend.

We hope and pray that his beautiful soul rests in peace. With love – David, Sebastian and Urs.

On December 16, the group posted that Marine was “in hospital” and that they “hope and pray for a speedy recovery.”

The exact cause of death has not been clarified, although reports in the Spanish media indicated that Marin was intubated after being admitted to the intensive care unit in Manchester.

Il Divo has postponed the rest of her UK tour dates in December by a year “due to illness”.

Marin was on stage earlier this month.

In his personal life, Marin was married to French-born singer Geraldine Larosa – better known by her stage name Innocence – until 2009.

Lauren Kelly tweeted: “So sad. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Carlos and Il Divo so many times over the years. It was such a class act. Thoughts with everyone I love.”

Bruno Tonioli, judge on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing wrote: “The devastated Carlosmarin has passed away. We had the best time putting together our first ildivoofficial performance in 17 years with such a great voice, a great man and a true passionate soul with a sinister sense of humor and we will miss you so sad.”
