A source said of Gong Mil, “It’s well deserved. Despite her accomplishments in music and television, she believes that campaigning is the most important thing she’s ever done.”

“Not only has she had first-hand experience with it, but she’s met many women who have suffered. She has a real fire in her stomach regarding campaigning.

“She is very passionate about this and brings a lot of energy to everything she does.

“She was incredibly brave to speak out because it’s something so personal to her.”

Mel has worked alongside The Sun for our campaigns to provide more funding for shelters that help women escape violence and abuse.

In 2019, she led her crusade to win better support for victims to number 10 – declaring it her new “mission.”

The year before, she released her memoir, Brutally Honest, which detailed her marriage to convicted domestic abuser Stephen Belafonte, 46.

She claims that the film’s producer, who kept a criminal record about her, began the reign of forced abuse on their wedding night in 2007 and lasted for a decade.

Mel, who treated herself with drinks and drugs, revealed that she attempted suicide on the eve of the final of The X Factor in 2014.

She has a 10-year-old daughter, Madison, from Belafonte whom she began divorcing in 2018.

They eventually reached a settlement that included dropping the abuse charges.

Earlier this year, Mel told The Sun how she found a new man – but her past has taken its toll.

“If someone got too close to me, my hair would still be straight, even in normal everyday life,” she said. She is also traumatized by her custody deal with Belafonte which means she has been separated from Madison for months at a time.

She explained, “I live in the aftermath of what happens when you leave someone who can still control you.”

In the Love Should Not Hurt video, released by Women’s Aid, Mel lived in a beautiful home – while being abused behind closed doors.

She was seen wrestling on the ground, being choked and punched.

An estimated 1.6 million women in England and Wales experienced domestic violence in the year to March 2020, with the 16-24 year old group being most at risk.

“I want to be a patron to help women until the day I die,” said Mel, who is keen to get the Spice Girls back on the road. “I’ll always be there flying the flag.”
