Watanham were eliminated from the European Conference League after UEFA awarded Rennes a 3-0 win for their postponed match.

Twenty-four hours before their final group game against the French club on December 9, Tottenham decided the match could not go ahead after eight players and five members of staff tested positive for Covid-19.

Rennes, who has already traveled to London, accused Spurs of making a “unilateral decision” and a “lack of fair play”.

Tottenham were desperate to be rescheduled, but after talks with both clubs, UEFA revealed the match could not go ahead after not finding a suitable date before the December 31 deadline.

Tottenham suggested playing last Wednesday, if the Premier League agreed to postpone Thursday’s match against Leicester, and even offered to reverse the match and play in France.

The league board refused but the match was subsequently called off the day after the outbreak at Leicester camp.

A 3-0 win for Rennes, who had already topped the group, meant Spurs were third in Group G and exited from Europe, with Vitesse Arnhem advancing to a playoff against Rapid Vienna to reach the playoffs.

The decision was made by UEFA’s Appeals Body, which leaves Tottenham without recourse to appeal through UEFA, and the club reluctantly accepted the decision.

A Tottenham spokesperson said: “We are disappointed with the decision of the UEFA Appeals Body and the refusal to allow more time to reschedule the match.

“But we have to accept that ruling, and our focus now turns to the competitions we are still in.”

A UEFA statement read: “The President of the UEFA Appeals Body has taken the following decision: to announce the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League group stage match between Tottenham Hotspur and Rennes, which was scheduled to take place on 9 December. 2021, and was also lost by Tottenham Hotspur FC, who is therefore considered to have lost the match 0-3 in accordance with Annex J.3.1 of the UEFA Europa Conference League regulations (season 2021/22).
