At a press conference in Cardiff on Friday, First Minister Mark Drakeford said people should remember that “the virus thrives on human contact” and urged them to limit social contact.
“This is the calm before the storm,” he said. “Every contact we have is an opportunity for us to spread or catch the virus.
“The Omicron variant likes large gatherings and enclosed spaces as it can pass easily from person to person. If you can, please reduce the number of people you meet, especially if you see older or more vulnerable people over Christmas.”
Meanwhile, the novel coronavirus restrictions will come into effect in Wales from December 27. Legal restrictions will see nightclubs closed, and additional measures to protect customers and employees in stores and businesses, such as one-way regulations and physical barriers, will also be put in place. The rules will also be changed to include a requirement to work from home where possible, but those in offices will have to adhere to a social distancing of 2 metres.
An additional £60m of funding is being made available to help businesses affected by the changes. The Welsh government will meet on Monday where further restrictions will be discussed, according to Mr Drakeford.
