England found themselves 2-0 with their selection in both Tests widely questioned

After a heavy defeat in Adelaide, England lost 2-0 at The Ashes and their hopes of reclaiming the pitcher are fading fast.

Despite Gus Butler’s brave efforts on the final day, the Tourists suffered a 275-point defeat as Australia took the last wicket early in the evening session.

With question marks on nearly every aspect of the England squad after the first two Tests, Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain and Rob Key spoke on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast, discussing what went wrong in England and why…

Mike Atherton

I thought England were poor in this match. They obviously had a very good last afternoon fighting with tremendous power, showing a lot of spirit and after an early Ole Pop all the batsmen had to be honored so they would definitely be proud of the way they fought this afternoon.

But it was on the heels of four bad days that I thought England were being outdone in all aspects of the game here. I thought they picked poorly, I thought their strategy with the ball was poor, and they obviously didn’t get enough kicks on a good Adelaide pitch; They were overtaken by Australia and Australia without two major bowlers, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

What happened this evening shouldn’t hide that, albeit it was great to see that fighting spirit.

I would like to point out that the Australian bowling attack is excellent, that England are not playing well enough and haven’t done so in a long time.

That’s part individuals, one assumes it’s partial confidence now because when you go through a period of time where you’re not running the board, that confidence should start to fade, but batting is an odd game and while you’re rooting when you run, nobody gets enough of them – This is just a matter of individuals.

England’s top-ranked Rory Burns has struggled to run so far in this series

The thinking behind the team selection here in Adelaide was really disconcerting and confusing. When I considered selecting this team, for this deck, four types of new bowling ball players, and five stitches in the right arm, all within a narrow range of speed, leaving your top-paced man – rested, they said he was quite fit, resting for what ? They’re 2-0 down – and spinners.

It just didn’t make sense. I couldn’t see any situation where that choice would make sense in this game and I find that very disturbing because they have to talk about the choice, obviously, before the match and there is no general cricket logic that comes with this team in that stadium.

I think it went wrong again before the ball went down. For my life, I just can’t fathom how you win heart and bat while you’re on top of a Brisbane green and play a balanced attack with a spinner – leaving Broad and Anderson – and then turn into a flat, hot dry one in Adelaide, no cloud cover throughout the Test match, and you’ll play five strings and leave the disc your spinner.

Stuart Broad was one of five right-arm welders in the English bowling attack at the Adelaide Oval

So again, like the first test match, before the ball drops, they make poor decisions off the field. Then he hit (falled) again, never far from balls again, bowling a little shorter again – even their stock ball was half a meter lower than where it should have been in Adelaide, a foul similar to the one they made four years ago.

With all of that, the whole point is beating. At a fine pitch in Adelaide they scored 230 points in the first half and 190 in the second, so batting – excluding Root – remains a major concern for English cricket.

It depends a lot on Joe Root and it’s been in the last couple of years, actually, longer because we’ve been talking like this when we’ve been saying they depend on Cook and then Root. So, it’s been a very long time since we’ve been able to count on players coming in and running.

The biggest concern with that, I think, is what would you do from here if you were a coach in this place? It’s the same with rotation, really. They made a shocking decision to ignore the turntable in this game and play it on a green tailor but the truth is that they don’t rate their spinning at all.

Same with multiplication: what do you do? Who are you attending? You basically have guys coming to it. These guys like Rory Burns, people like that, are the guys who are supposed to be great, reliable players who are supposed to go on to be at least good cricketers.

If you don’t get that from them, you are looking forward to your little ones who should be there learning and taking a little experience.
