Zach Crowley prepares to call up England in Ashes Boxing Day Test | England cricket team

Zach Crowley prepares for a call-up on Boxing Day as England consider four changes to the third Test in a bid to stop the faltering Ashes campaign.

The 23-year-old rose to prominence with a six-and-a-half 267 finish against Pakistan in Southampton in 2020, only to be dropped in the summer after a troubling dose of second season syndrome brought back only the Test average. 11 in 2021.

England renewed Crowley’s central contract in September and noted the 6-foot-5-inch Australian’s apparent enjoyment of the Aussies in the net and when making 45 with the Lions in the warm-up match. One of Rory Burns or Haseeb Hamid could now make way at the top of the rankings.

Speaking earlier in the tour, Crowley said, “I feel like I’m in a really good place with my hit and if I get the chance, I’m pretty confident I can have a good time here.”

While both teams struggled to open up, Hamid was shaping up well initially for scores of 25 and 27 in Brisbane only to fail twice in Adelaide, and Burns tormented until the fourth round 34 in the second Test, another option to post Crowley would be to replace Ole Pop and possibly adjust the batting order.

However, Jonny Birstow is close to returning to sixth place, after Bob on the eve of the series only pushed him for a Syrian man to follow 34 at the start in Gabba in single digits amid a troubling struggle against Nathan Lyon.

In addition to Mark Wood’s expected return in a bowling attack, the deck in the MCG may require a spinning disk and thus a Jack Leach summon. Head coach Chris Silverwood hasn’t regretted not having a spinner in Adelaide, despite five wickets and plenty of pay attention to Lyon over the course of 67 times.

Who gives way also isn’t clear, as Chris Woks struggles to sway the ball, but he is the team’s only viable No. 8, as well as England’s third-best scorer in the series. If two bowling changes were made, that would mean the withdrawal of two Woakes, Ollie Robinson, Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Meanwhile, Australia are considering a home debut for 32-year-old Scott Boland in a selection that would make Victoria’s right-hand man the second Indigenous Australian men’s cricketer in the country after Jason Gillespie.

Despite the return of Captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood is unlikely to be ready after he missed his second test with a side strain. The fitness levels of fellow welders Mitchell Stark, Jay Richardson and Michael Nesser are being evaluated after the bout went deep on day five. Boland, who is seen as an MCG specialist, will introduce new stems here.
