4.5-magnitude earthquake hits the Permian Basin

(Reuters) – An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 struck near Stanton, West Texas, on Monday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 7.8 km.

The earthquake occurred in the Permian Basin, home to the largest shale oil and gas field. MRT News reported that this was the second strongest earthquake in West Texas in the past 10 years.

After a series of smaller earthquakes in recent months, the state’s energy regulator, the Texas Railroad Commission, in September set limits on how much wastewater oil and gas producers can pump underground.
