ATHENS (Reuters) – An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck the Greek island of Crete on Wednesday, the Geodynamic Institute of Greece said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) earlier recorded the earthquake at 6.1. The Egyptian authorities said that the quake was felt in some cities of the country.
Akis Tslentis, director of the Geodynamic Institute who was on the island of Crete, said authorities had given a revised reading of 5.7 from 5.6 previously. “I felt it,” he told Greece’s Sky TV.
“Fortunately it was in the sea. The area is already burdened (with previous tremors) and if it is inland, there may be damage,” he said.
The center said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 80 km. The Greek Geodynamic Institute said the depth was 42.7 km.
