Boris Johnson urged people to get a booster vaccine, saying that up to 90% of people in intensive care had not received their third Covid vaccine.
On a visit to a vaccine center in Milton Keynes, the prime minister said people should enjoy the New Year festivities while taking extra precautions such as ventilation and testing, and urged people to accept the offer of a third dose.
“I’m sorry to say this, but the vast majority of people who currently end up in intensive care in our hospitals are people who have not been reinforced,” he said. “I’ve spoken to doctors who say the numbers are up to 90% of people in intensive care.”
He added, “If you haven’t been vaccinated, you are likely to be hospitalized fully eight times. So it’s great to do. It’s very, very important. Get a boost for yourself, and enjoy the New Year with caution and caution.”
The National Health Service (NHS) has called on people to have a ‘Happy New Year’, highlighting research by the National Center for Intensive Care Audit and Research (ICNARC) that found that at the beginning of last month, there were about three out of five patients in London’s Intensive Care Units (ICU) have yet to receive a jab, a number she said is rising.
With new cases of Covid-19 reaching 129,471 in England and Wales on Tuesday, the prime minister said Omicron continued to “cause real problems” even though it was “clearly milder than the delta variant”. There were 18 new deaths within 28 days of testing positive in Tuesday’s numbers.
Johnson, who spent the Christmas holidays at Checkers with his family, suggested people take the tests before heading out to New Year’s events, but the system is short. Wes Streeting, the shadow health minister, said the situation had been “total chaos”.
“People are trying to do the right thing, follow the government’s own advice and test themselves regularly, but are prevented by the incompetence of the Conservative government,” he said. “They need to take control and provide enough testing so that people can keep themselves and others safe.”
Daisy Cooper, a Liberal Democrat health spokeswoman, said that “for now or not Covid tests are being done on frontline workers. If the government doesn’t take action together today, vaccine centers could soon stop, and patient safety could be at risk due to further outbreaks.” Absenteeism from the NHS and care staff.”
Nearly 90% of the population aged 12 or older received the first dose of the Covid vaccine but only 56.9% received a booster dose. The government has sent a text message to everyone urging them to “get support now” and highlighting the available vaccine slots during the holiday period.
However, it has stopped bringing vaccination passports in England and has instead introduced Covid permits which give people the option to show proof of vaccination or a recent lateral flow test to enter some of the larger indoor settings.
