A massive explosion in Baltimore sent shock waves across the city on Thursday.
A five-story coal silo at the CSX Cole Plant in an industrial estate south of Baltimore exploded just before midday, according to firefighters.
“Special rescue units and fireboats were on site,” local firefighters said in a tweet.
“Shock waves can be felt all over the city.”
Baltimore City Councilwoman Felicia Porter said there were no reports of injuries so far.
“We are aware of the explosion that occurred today at the CSX Cole Plant building in Curtis Bay,” Porter said on Twitter.
Our office works with Mayor [Brandon] Scott to address this as quickly and safely as possible.”
Firefighters believe the CSX train was moving through a tunnel when the coal exploded, according to local news outlet WMAR-2.
Authorities urged people to stay away from the blast site.
Baltimore residents took to social media to say the sheer force of the shock wave sounded like an earthquake.
