Five moments of the Capitol riots I will never forget
Joe Biden gave his long-awaited speech marking the anniversary of the deadly riots in the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 – a agonizing speech in which he condemned Donald Trump for watching television during the rebellion as his supporters attacked Congress.
He also denied the idea that the rebels were “patriots”, declaring that “You can’t love your country only when you win. You can only obey the law when it’s appropriate. You can’t be patriot when you embrace and empower lies.”
Those who stormed the Capitol, those who incited and incited, and those who called them to carry a dagger in the throat of America, on American democracy. They did not come here out of patriotism or principle. They came here in a state of anger. Not in the service of America, but in the service of one man.”
His speech comes as some Democrats are said to be quietly exploring how they can prevent Trump from taking office again, in the wake of deadly riots last year in which five people were killed.
Trump responded by issuing three statements to continue expressing his grievances and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, while calling for “MAGA Nation” to “uprising” against the Biden administration over vaccine mandates.

Key PointsShow Latest Update 1641547797 Biden urges Americans to protect democracy
President Joe Biden used the first anniversary of the January 6 attack on the USCapitol Thursday to urge Americans to protect the country’s fragile democracy by defending the right to vote.
Speaking 10 months before midterm elections in November that could give control of one or both houses of Congress to Republicans, Biden, a Democrat, warned that the danger presented a year ago has not gone away.
The lies that provoked the anger and madness that we saw in this place, did not recede. “So we have to be firm and firm and tough in our defense of the right to vote and for that vote to be counted,” Biden said from the US Capitol, where a group of Trump supporters attempted to invalidate the results of the 2020 election.

“Now let us go ahead and write the next chapter in American history, where January 6th marks not the end of democracy but the beginning of a renaissance of freedom and equity,” Biden said.
In remarks delivered before Biden’s speech, Vice President Kamala Harris also highlighted Trump supporters’ efforts to undermine democracy, called on Congress to pass legislation on voting rights and called on Americans to participate.
“We cannot let our future be decided by those who are bent on silencing our voices, flipping our voices, and spreading lies and disinformation by some radical faction that may have recently re-emerged but whose roots are ancient,” Harris said.
“The fragility of democracy is this: that if we are not vigilant, and if we do not defend it, then democracy will not hold; it will falter and fail.”

1641535031 Media difference in coverage of the Capitol uprising for a year
At one point on Thursday while actor Adam Kinzinger was recounting the US Capitol Rebellion on CNN, and on MSNBC there was a report on the Justice Department’s investigation into the riots, Fox News aired a video of a dog drawn to illustrate a discussion about people spending too much time in front of screen, according to the Associated Press.
This snapshot of television on January 6 highlights a discrepancy in coverage of the first anniversary of the riots that was evident from the early hours of Thursday.
Between 6.20 a.m. and 9 a.m., Fox and Friends mentioned anniversaries only twice.
While all major radio and television networks, including Fox News, covered President Joe Biden’s anniversary speech live, the differences in their coverage were stark. “You can obviously hear the passion of his voice telling the American people what’s at stake,” said ABC anchor David Muir. NBC’s Savannah Guthrie said the attack on Trump was “very cool”.
On the other hand, Fox News commentary referred to the speech as divisive and a missed opportunity. “We have a lot of challenges to deal with,” said presenter Dana Perino. “You could have talked about the strength of our system.”
NewsMax’s Tom Basile said the president believes the country knows its worst moments. He said Mr. Biden sees everyone involved in the attack as extremists and terrorists, “and I think the American people would be outraged by that.”

1641531605 “We were asked to take our gas masks out,” Jayapal recalls.
Representative Pramila Jayapal said she remembers “vividly” when rioters stormed the US Capitol on January 6 last year.
“I remember it very clearly, I remember every detail,” Ms. Jayapal said. “We were asked to take out our gas masks, which many of us had never seen, never knew how to use, and then were asked to go down on the floor.”
Demanding accountability, the legislator said, “We need to get to the truth of what exactly happened and who was involved and bring everyone, including those at the top, to justice. It will be difficult for us to assure that this will not happen again. And to allow the country to heal.” “.

1641529926 Democrats warn of perpetuating a big lie
Several Democrats warned of the continuing threat to democracy over allegations of election fraud launched by Donald Trump as they celebrated the first anniversary of the riots on January 6.
“We are now at a point where the big lie perpetuates itself,” Senator Bob Casey said in the Senate, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
On January 6, 2021, we thwarted the attack on the Capitol. “On January 6, 2022, the attack on our democracy continues,” said actor Tom Malinowski.
Representative Mary Jay Scanlon criticized Republicans for casting doubt on the election results, adding that those who “sit silently or make cowardly statements about the uncertainty of the election result,” are merely “guilty.”

1641527205 “I was scared,” Ruskin’s daughter tells
Tabitha Raskin, the daughter of Democratic actor Jimmy Raskin, told CNN that she was “scared” because she hid under a desk in actor Steny Hoyer’s office with her husband Hank Kronick after the riots broke out.
As soon as we heard them nearby, we immediately looked for a place to hide. “It was the only really good place to hide,” she said, so the two of us hid under his desk. We were under there for a while. I remember there was a hole in the desk for wires, and I was scared. I just imagined people coming in and they would love to see us through the hole and then I remember trying to cover the hole.”

A poll shows that most Americans fear another attack on democracy
ICYMI: About 57 percent of Americans, including half of Republicans and seven out of 10 Democrats, think there will be a repeat of the pro-Trump insurgency that occurred a year ago today.
According to an Axios-Momentive poll, 63 percent of respondents also said the attack changed the way Americans think about democratic government in the United States.
It comes amid polls showing as many as 81 percent of Republican voters believe the 2020 election was not won by Biden and Democrats unfairly — and a deep divide on many other issues, Graeme Massey wrote.
