BEIJING (AFP) – A strong overnight earthquake rocked a sparsely populated area in western China early on Saturday, forcing the suspension of high-speed rail service due to damage to tunnels, authorities said. They said at a press conference that four people with minor injuries in Min Yuan Hui Autonomous Prefecture have been treated and released. The 6.9-magnitude earthquake at 1:45 a.m. struck a mountainous region in Qinghai Province at 3,659 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level. The quake was felt 140 kilometers (85 miles) southeast of Xining, the provincial capital, where some people rushed out of homes and buildings.
