Steven Gerrard insists Ralph Rangnick needs time to make his mark on Manchester United and insists Aston Villa are not underestimating the FA Cup task at Old Trafford.
United’s interim boss Rangnick has endured a turbulent week after the first defeat of his reign at Wolverhampton, followed by reports of disharmony in the dressing room, with as many as 17 players said to be unhappy.
But Villa boss Gerrard has not been paying attention to the noises swirling around United, as the former Liverpool midfielder is battling in the FA Cup against a familiar opponent.
“I think everyone still respects the fact that Manchester United are a good team at Old Trafford,” Gerrard said ahead of Monday’s third-round match.
They are capable of hitting anyone out there if it’s a good night. Certainly there will be no disdain for the opponent we shall face.
“When new managers take charge, they need time to put their identity and philosophy on it.
“If you analyze their results, they won’t be as bad as people suggest.
“I analyzed it correctly and didn’t share some of the things that are said about opponents, managers or players.
“Everyone knows that Manchester United deserve this respect in terms of the level at which they operate.”

Gerrard has special memories in the FA Cup
Gerrard crowned the FA Cup with distinction during his time as a player, winning the tournament in 2001 and 2006.
As captain of Liverpool in 2006, he made one of the best FA Cup final performances against West Ham in Cardiff.
Gerrard scored twice and scored his thrilling stoppage-time goal from long distance 3-3 before the Reds won on penalties.
He said: “From the perspective of history, it means a lot because I had a good level of success. Some of the highlights of my career came in this competition.
“It is a true tradition, a special competition for every English and British person because we know them so well.
“Even when foreigners come to the country and you talk to them, the FA Cup always comes.
“It has made a name for itself all over the world. I am looking forward to competing in it from a management point of view.
“He’s very welcome in the FA Cup after you dumped Manchester United in your first game. There was definitely kindness going in there. But we’re going to go in and give it our best.”

A strong lineup from Villa to face United
While Rangnick could rotate his team, Gerrard promised to put together a strong lineup at Old Trafford.
Philippe Coutinho is unlikely to be involved following his loan move from Barcelona, but England duo Oli Watkins and Tyrone Mings are available again and former United captain Ashley Young could emerge after breaking his toe.
Gerrard said: “A good and positive run in the Cup can generate confidence and belief. Especially if you qualify through a round when you face Manchester United at Old Trafford.
“It will be settled at night, be it extra time or penalties if necessary. So we need to be as ambitious and brave as possible.
“It’s not a case like it used to be where you set up a certain way and maybe have a safety net in a certain period of the game to get back into the reboot.
The dynamics have changed. But if we can do a really good account of ourselves, I hope it will be a fun night.”
