At least 19 people, including nine children, have died after a fire broke out in an apartment building in New York City.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has confirmed the “horrific” death toll in the Bronx apartment building fire.
A city official who was not permitted to speak to the media confirmed to the Associated Press the number of children killed.
More than 60 people have been infected and 13 are still in critical condition in hospital, Stefan Ringel, a senior adviser to Mayor Eric Adams said.

“This is going to be one of the worst fires we’ve seen in modern times,” Mayor Eric Adams said.
“We lost 19 of our neighbors today. It’s an immeasurable tragedy. Join me in praying for those we’ve lost, especially the nine innocent young lives that were killed,” he added on Twitter.
“To everyone affected by this tragedy.. your city will be with you in the coming days.”
New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the majority of the victims were suffering from heavy smoke inhalation.
‘One of the worst fires to strike the city in recent memory’
About 200 firefighters responded to the fire in the Twin Park Apartments, a 19-story building on Bronx’s East 181st Street.
Some were seen blowing smoke out of the building with hose lines, and one was seen breaking a canopy upstairs to release the fumes.

Pictures posted online show a rescue staircase extending up to the eighth floor, several lame children given oxygen after being removed from the building, and evacuees with their faces covered in soot.
Negro said the firefighters “found victims on every floor and were taking them out because of cardiac and respiratory arrest.”
“This is unprecedented in our city. We expect there will be a high death toll.”
He added that the fire originated in a duplex apartment on the second and third floors.
Then the firefighters found the apartment door open, apparently allowing the flames to accelerate and spread smoke quickly.

Negro went on to describe the fire as one of the worst to hit the city in recent memory, comparing it to the Happy Land social club incident in 1990, which killed 89 people.
He does not think the fire is suspicious
Inspectors from the New York City Department of Buildings were also called to the scene, where they were conducting structural stability inspections and assisting firefighters.
The source of the fire is not believed to be suspicious but the cause is under investigation.
People in the vicinity were advised to close their windows to avoid inhaling smoke by the New York City Department of Emergency Management.
Police announced the opening of Angelo Battery Preparatory School to any residents who were made homeless by the fire.
The incident comes just days after a house fire in Philadelphia killed 13 people – including seven children
