An earthquake struck a submarine off the western coast of Cyprus on Tuesday early Tuesday morning, with local authorities reporting no damage as seismic activity was felt across the island and in neighboring Turkey, Israel and Lebanon.
Reports said a strong and relatively shallow earthquake of magnitude 6.1 had its epicenter 30 miles west of Polis Chrysochous and shook buildings along the road in the capital, Nicosia.
According to the CY Geological Survey, the intensity of the earthquake was felt throughout the island.
The main event took place at 3:08 am with Paphos Mayor Fedunas Fedunos to state radio that he felt the earthquake and went out with his family. Other reports said that some people who were awake or who felt the earthquake took to the streets.
No damage was reported during or immediately after the earthquake, while a tsunami warning was later called as aftershock activity was minimal.
Tuesday’s event occurred in the same area as a stronger earthquake in 1996, when two people on the island were killed after seismic activity centered near the coast.
