Don’t worry, you can finish Dying Light 2 in 20 hours

Over the weekend, developers Dying Light 2 Techland boasted that it would take “500 hours to complete the game.” Turns out that wasn’t the exciting selling point they had come to expect of an open-world parkour-o-shooter. Many found this claim stressful because oh my god 500 hours is over 20 days what do you think we do with our lives, how much of that work is crowded? After initially stepping back to explain that 500 hours is how long it would take to do absolutely everything, Techland has now made it clear that you can finish the game’s main story in 20 hours, or 80 if you encounter every side quest as well.

Their starting number obviously wouldn’t be the length of a standard gameplay, but following them up by saying that “the average player should finish story + side quests and do a lot of exploration in less than 100 hours” still seemed cumbersome leaving open questions about stuffing and work involved. Following this clarification on Saturday, Techland tweeted another clarification on Monday night:

We wanted to clarify our recent communication about the amount of hours required to complete the game. Dying Light 2: Stay Human is designed for players with different playing styles and preferences to explore the world as they see fit. #DyingLight2 pic.twitter.com/tcaDKULMo8

Permission: 20 hours to complete the main story; 80 hours to finish the main story and each side mission; 500 hours to do all the quests, picks, and endings, check every place on the map, see all the dialogues, and find all the collectibles. The 500 hour option is for players who are really in pain to fill in the time until they are allowed to go up to their grave.

Multiplayer games can hold my attention for 500 hours. Games with complex simulation or deep strategy can grab my attention for a long time. Roguelikes, roguelikelikes, and other games based on procedural generation can hold my attention for a long time (I crossed 1,300 hours in The Binding Of Isaac). But when someone tells me that a single-player open world game with a set amount of authored content is too long, I don’t want to play it.

To get me to play 500 hours, either the moment-by-moment action would be massive or the game would need an unwieldy amount of cool side quests and activities. Even considering that Dying Light 2 took two years longer to develop than planned, the latter seems unlikely. To hear that 500 hours is the time it takes to do boring things, yes, that makes sense. But 80 hours? I can believe it, and I might play that if the side quests are good (some of the side quests in the sprawling open world games are).

Despite the slips of the marketing department, I’m interested. Having played quite a bit last year, Dom Peppiatt has enjoyed parkour and stealth in the two-part preview/interview.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human is slated to release on February 4th via Steam and the Epic Games Store. At £54.99, less than 11p an hour! Fabulous! It will also be on Xbox, PlayStations and thanks to the cloud, Switch.
